Authors Mauroof and Ahmad have assembled a detailed collection of hand drawings and photographs of the unique, and fragile religious heritage of the Maldives, and provided written analysis of the most important examples of the genre: tropical mosques built using decorated interlocking coral stone taken from the reef s surrounding the islands, which have intricate carvings and detailed timber lacquer work not seen in any part of the world. The type of construction found in these mosques, which is called “coral stone carpentry” is no longer possible and the mosques that survive today are the last of their kind.
