Dr. Ezrin Arbi, who is an Emeritus Professor at the Universiti Malaya,In Kuala Lumpur founded the Department of Architecture   there in 1998, and has been living in Malaysia most of his life. But he was born into the Minangkabau culture of Sumatra, and shares the tradition of house building there in this remarkable book. Minangkabau Rumah Gadang includes both Mosques and houses, is of the highest significance, both for the respective nations of Indonesia and Malaysia, and for the global Islamic community, and those who are engaged in research in these fields as well, contributing to wider historical and cultural understanding.

In his capacity as both a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities Program and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (IMOS), Arbi is keenly aware of the essential connection between the preservation and conservation of significant examples of a specific vernacular tradition and the overarching mission of sustainability. By validating and promoting these exemplars of Minangkabau and Malaysian culture this effort by Prof. Ezrin will also make a global audience aware of the ways in which traditional wisdom allowed people to live in harmony with the environment, as well as the importance of preserving, and recycling rather than destroying important buildings.
