The is the first in-depth survey of both the vernacular and contemporary architecture of entire region of Southwest China, including Sichuan Province, Chongqing, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,Guizhou Province, Tibet and Yunnan.

Qian Fang, who is the Director of the China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute in Chengdu, brings his extensive experience and understanding of this entire area to bear in this remarkable and historically important work. He is both an architect and urban planner with a keen interest in photography and has dedicated himself to recording the rapidly vanishing and incredibly varied traditional architecture of this little studied region of China.

This includes a balanced presentation of his own projects as they relate to each of the regions he presents, showing how he has responded to the highly individualized styles of each of them, and as such this presents a valuable resource for those who are interested in how to design within a certain regional context in a way that is sensitive to both local customs and materials.
