Mohamed Mauroof Jameel is a specialist in the architectural heritage of Maldives. He has wide-ranging experience in the design,and management of projects and institutions, such as the Hulhumale’ resort. He also served as a Cabinet Minister in the government of Maldives has contributed to the development of the construction industry. At present Mauroof is an architectural consultant and a researcher. He is also a keen artist and illustrator.

Yahaya Bin Ahmad, is an Associate Professor and Dean of Faculty of Built Environment at University of Malaya, Malaysia. His areas of speciality are vernacular architecture, conservation management and conservation of historic buildings. His work is widely published and he has wide-ranging experience in the research and the academic sector. He served in the government of Malaysia as the deputy Commissioner of Heritage and as a consultant to both local and international governments on restoration and conservation issues. Apart from teaching and management commitments at present he also supervises many doctoral candidates and research programmes.

Authors Mauroof and Ahmad have assembled a detailed collection of hand drawings and photographs of the unique, and fragile religious heritage of the Maldives, and provided written analysis of the most important examples of the genre: tropical mosques built using decorated interlocking coral stone taken from the reef s surrounding the islands, which have intricate carvings and detailed timber lacquer work not seen in any part of the world. The type of construction found in these mosques, which is called “coral stone carpentry” is no longer possible and the mosques that survive today are the last of their kind.
